We had a great trip to Harbortown Merritt Island this weekend (26-28 Feb)! As many as 12 boats were signed-up at one point, but alas only 6 boats and 2 drive-ins turned out for the festivities. Dire weather predictions and virtual farm animals caused some last minute cancellations. But the no-shows missed out. The weather was fantastic on both Friday and Sunday. Saturday had a rainy start to it, but the rain was gone for good by 2:30 and the party began (actually it started during the rain, but that’s another story). Most of the boats arrived on Friday to the great hospitality of the Harbortown staff. These folks know you by name, and only charge 75 cents per foot! The fixed wooden docks were not much of an issue at this marina, as the tide is less than one foot and they have the docks built to an optimum height. Friday evening we had docktails on Pam’s Paycheck, largely due to us being too lazy to haul out the tables. Several of us had dinner at the marina restaurant, where a very lively band was playing for a private party. It was good to see Fire Escape back on the water after a very long absence.

Saturday morning light rain moved in, but most of the group moved out to Cocoa Village for an early start to the Mardi Gras party. They spent the entire day in the village, enjoying the party. The rest of the group waited for the rain to stop, then went to work on the CFCC float for the Mardi Gras parade. Andy Carlin volunteered his truck to pull Bob Poindexter’s dinghy, and, once decorated with beads and CFCC banners, we had a float! We had Andy drive and put the Fleming’s in the dinghy throwing beads and the Poindexter’s and Mittauer’s in the back of the truck throwing beads. We threw 1440 of them to a very eager crowd! The locals REALLY like this Mardi Gras, and enthusiastically expressed their feelings. It was also televised - some of you couch potato shut-ins may have seen us. With some practice, we were able to put beads on target like no other float. We all had a great time!

Sunday came too soon, along with a blazing sun. Summer is definitely coming! We headed-out back to the real-world. Can’t wait for the next trip, which for me is Caladesi. For those going to St. Augustine, ignore the weather reports and go boating. The weather forecasters are wrong more than they are right, and even when they are right it’s better to be on a boat in the rain than NOT on a boat in the rain.

February 26 – 28
Cruise Leaders: Fleming/Mittauer
(407) 462-4016 (321) 525-0365

The next cruise will be over to Merritt Island on the East coast on February 26th -28th. Due to the large number of people who want to get their boats in the water, we’ve made a change to the marina. Instead of Cocoa Village Marina, we will be staying at Harbortown Marina in Merritt Island. We will still make the Cocoa Village Mardi Gras the main event of the weekend.

Marina information:

Harbortown Merritt Island Marina is located on the barge canal between the Indian and Banana rivers. This marina is in a very protected location. Even with very strong winds, the boats in the basin do not move much. The club last visited this marina in May 2008. The marina has a nice on-site restaurant with full bar and usually has a live band on weekends. The marina has fixed wooden docks, but the marina reports the tide is “minimal”. The shower facilities have all been renovated recently. The marina has a pool, though it is not currently getting much use! They currently have a special for transients of 75 cents per foot (no minimum) plus $4 electric, if you use the coupon on their website. This is a fantastic rate, but you must print the coupon from website. They also have free Wi-fi and CATV. The staff plans to put all our boats on the same dock. The marina will also allow us to park trucks and trailers on-site if desired. This gives us the option of going over to Cocoa Village by boat, truck, or combination.

Marina website is http://www.harbortownmarina.com/

Nice aerial photos at: http://marinas.com/view/marina/2322_Harbortown_Marina_Merritt_Island_FL (Try the zoom-in feature too – very nice!)

Launch Ramp:
Primary ramp is Kelly Park ramp, about a mile away from marina at 2550 North Banana River Drive, Merritt Island, FL, 32952 http://www.centralfloridacruiseclub.com/resources/kelly-park-banana-river-boat-ramp/

http://www.brevardparks.com/visittheparks/parks/prkbch1.php#KellyEast

Another option would be to launch in Cocoa Village at Lee Wenner Park, which is at 300 Riveredge Boulevard, Cocoa, FL http://www.cocoafl.org/index.aspx?NID=201

http://www.brevardparks.com/visittheparks/parks/prkmn1.php

Two cautionary notes if you launch in Cocoa Village:

1: When parking overnight, you must call Brevard County Parks & Recreation at (321) 633-1874 for permission to keep truck and trailer there. (Not a big deal — they just want to know it is there).

2: This is right in the heart of Mardi Gras area. Brevard County people say you should still be able to get to the ramp (streets not planned to be closed leading to ramp), but there could be traffic issues that make it hard to get to the ramp.

Mardi Gras information:

The main Mardi Gras event takes place on Saturday, February 27 from 3:00 pm until midnight in Cocoa Village. However, there will be activities from Thursday through Sunday. The website contains a lot of information, though it takes some navigating to find it! http://spacecoastmardigras.com/main.cfm?mn=1

Activities planned so far:

Friday: Docktails and light snacks on dock at 5pm. Dinner at marina restaurant.

Saturday: Spend most of day over at Cocoa Village Mardi Gras. Transportation method still to be determined, but we should have enough designated drivers (boats and/or trucks) to work this out.

Sunday: Breakfast on dock. Depart at leisure.

If you will be joining us on this trip, please send me an email at mfleming@vol.com with the following information:
Boat Name:
Boat Length:
Boat Beam:
Port or Starboard tie preference (not guaranteed)
Cell phone number:
Expected date of arrival:
Expected date of departure:Number of people:

Finally, if anyone needs help launching or finding your way to marina please let me know, and we will group-up as needed. I apologize for the last-minute change in venue, but it’s important we are all at the same marina!

We will send an info update as we get closer. Hope to see everyone there!

The Gasparilla Pirate Festival is an annual celebration held in the city of Tampa, Florida. Held each year in late January and hosted by Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla and the City of Tampa, it celebrates the apocryphal legend of José Gaspar (Gasparilla), supposedly a Spanish pirate captain who operated in Southwest Florida. The theme is an “invasion” by Gasparilla and his men, which begins when the “Krewe” (made up of residents of the city) arrives on a 165′ long pirate ship, the Jose Gaspar, in Tampa Bay and land near downtown Tampa. The mayor of Tampa then lends the key of the city to the pirate captain and a parade ensues down Bayshore Boulevard, one of Tampa’s major streets. The krewes throw beads, coins and other items while shooting blank pistols from floats during the parade. The average attendance for the event is over 400,000 people. According to the event’s official website, 2003’s Gasparilla parade affected an economic impact of nearly 23 million dollars to Tampa.

January 15-17, 2010

Ten boats and four drive-ins came to Hontoon Island to enjoy homemade chili and fun on the dock. We had a total of 28 people, plus numerous visitors from a local dealership cruise club. In spite of dire predictions, the weather was great except for some rain late Saturday night. Most boats arrived Friday, and we spent the time socializing and playing Mexican Train dominoes. On Saturday, we played some Corn Hole and held the chili contest in the afternoon.

This year we had a few chili cookoff entries from the other cruise club, which added to the fun, but they couldn’t seriously compete, and first place went to Peggy Jamison. Second place went to Carolee Bavaro. While not officially awarded, prize for the spiciest must go to Peggy Peterson. I brought some of that home to use as paint remover, and, as an added bonus, I don’t need to add spices to anything anymore (won’t taste them anyway). Nick Peterson brought some representatives from the United States Power Squadrons in on Saturday, and they did boat safety inspections for us. The 50/50 of $36 was won by Mike Fleming. Saturday night was spent watching a lop-sided football game under the clouds out on the dock and playing more dominoes. We departed at various times on Sunday, some to the North and some to the South. “Just Add Water” may need to be re-christened “Just Add Halon” after this trip, as they experienced an engine fire on the way back to the ramp. Fortunately, they were able to get the fire out and return home safely. Thanks to Ron Moffitt for leading - it was another excellent cruise and a great start to the year.

Fun and exciting things that happened: CFC selected a new destination for New Year’s 2010. While a lengthy trip, the marina and city were definitely worth the drive. The famous Bahia Mar Marina is home to some of the world’s largest yachts. We were placed on the “small docks” which were designed to hold boats twice our size. Despite that, the Marina was very easy to navigate, had floating docks and great amenities, and was situated only two blocks from Ft. Lauderdale Beach area with a large selection of shops, bars, and restaurants.

Two boats arrived very early on Tuesday (Nauti Dog and Whazzup), and two more boats arrived Wednesday (Pier Pressure and Blue Moor Money). Four boats (Nacho Boat, Gulfstream, Pam’s Paycheck, and Moore Fun) arrived on Thursday (New Year’s Eve). Gulfstream got stuck on the the ramp at Pompano Beach after his trailer went off the ramp. After using their anchor to elevate the trailer, Terry’s trailer was able to make it up the ramp again. The nice warm day was ended with “Docktails” on the “H” Dock slips. Later, around 10PM, most folks went out to town to celebrate the New Year and watch the ball drop at the Ft Lauderdale Beach. Kenny & Carol Moore’s daughter, Jennifer Moore, accepted a marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Kevin Burke, under the moonlight on the beach (ahhhhhh….). So, it was an exciting New Year’s for all.

Friday: Clouds rolled in, but the group gathered for a Potluck Lunch. As usual, there was plenty of food for all. Several watched Football games, and the group went out to the Quarterdeck for Dinner. Rain & showers passed by around 3PM, as a strong cold front moved in. Double J arrived around 6PM (following the rain all the way from Central Florida).
Saturday: The four early boats all departed for home. The day was cool, but still sunny and very nice. 10 people loaded onto Nacho Boat for a cruise to downtown Ft. Lauderdale. As Nacho Boat was approaching the city dock, a body was discovered in the water. USCG and Ft. Lauderdale police were called. Nacho Boat stayed with the body until the Police arrived and began the recovery effort. The crew then headed to lunch and spent the rest of the afternoon at the Museum of Discover, where they also saw an IMAX show on Dinosaurs. Due to the windy conditions, two of the boats decided to re-position their towing rigs closer during the day.

Sunday – The five remaining boats left the Marina prior to 10AM, and everyone headed for home.

There are many ways a fire can start aboard a boat, but one of the most over-looked causes is halogen lights. They can and do start fires that can burn a yacht to the waterline. Two years ago one of our friends got aboard his new, large motor yacht and smelled smoke. A quick run around the boat turned up nothing until a closet door that was ajar was opened. Inside, a halogen light was doing a nice job of burning through a cardboard box that had been placed on a shelf below it. Flames had not yet erupted, but they were only a couple of minutes away.

In another example of a halogen light-induced fire a door to one of the staterooms below on a large aluminum megayacht was left ajar — with its top edge an inch away and squarely under a halogen light which was on. The door caught on fire, then the overhead, and then much of the boat was engulfed in flames.

We don’t read much about these causes of fire on board because often the evidence goes up in smoke. Boating magazine publishers are often reticent about printing articles about boat disasters for fear (not unfounded) of losing advertising revenue. Newspapers rarely report the cause of boat fires because they are only determined weeks later after a fire marshal’s investigation. These little lights are bright and powerful.

But yachts are not the only places halogen lights are used. They are also found in homes where they have started their share of often deadly fires. Last summer the Melbourne, Australia newspaper “The Sunday Age” ran a lengthy article about 57 halogen-related fires causing $17 million in damage in just 18 months in the area. Ten people died in the blazes.

Articles were published all over the country in early 1997 when fire destroyed the Upper West Side apartment of Lionel Hampton, the jazz vibraphonist. The fire burned so intensely and spread so rapidly that in minutes Mr. Hampton lost most of his personal belongings. Its cause was apparently an overturned halogen torchiere lamp. According to Wikipedia, halogen torchieres have been banned in some places, such as dormitories, because of the large numbers of fires they have caused. Halogen bulbs operate at high temperatures and the tall height of the lamps bring them near flammable materials, such as curtains.

An article in the New York Times after the Hampton blaze said: “About 40 million halogen torchieres were in use, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a Federal agency. The commission has received reports of about 100 fires resulting from the lamps, most of them in 1996. Ten people died in those fires. State Farm Insurance, the nation’s largest insurer of homes, began to identify fires caused by the lamps last year.”

On boats you often see them in brass fixtures. The Consumer Products Safety Commission has released a safety alert related to halogen torchiere floor lamps 15 years ago and due to fire safety concerns, the UL Listing for some of these lamps was pulled.

The intense heat generated by halogen lights is far beyond what most consumers are used to with conventional light bulbs. According to the New York Times, a 300-watt halogen bulb can reach 970 degrees Fahrenheit, and 500-watt bulbs can reach 1,200 degrees. Considering that paper ignites at 340 degrees and cloth at 640 degrees, it is easy to see why the halogen lamps pose a hazard.

Unfortunately halogen lights are used in many boats today, including some of the most prestigious and highest quality. In fact, at least one boat builder proudly advertises its use of halogen lights. Like most everything, if properly used halogen lights can be safe, and obviously most do not cause fires on boats.

Halogen bulbs must be handled with care. Place your hand 8 inches under a halogen light that is turned on, then gradually move your hand toward the light. You will quickly discover what the danger zone is. Depending on the wattage, this is usually two to four inches away. You must add to that a safety margin and then make sure that no door or flammable object can come within the danger zone. That is the easy part.

Next, inspect every fixture and make sure that it is not above a shelf (as in our example) where something might be placed by an unsuspecting guest and thereby be too close to the light. Halogen fixtures in overheads must be clear of all doors, curtains, or anything else that might find its way under the light. What is not so easy is to ordain what flammable object or material might fall, blow or otherwise inadvertently find its way into the halogen vortex.

Finally, hire a certified electrician to check each one of your halogen lights to make sure its enclosure is secure and thereby won’t start a fire above the fixture. This is what was happening in Melbourne, Australia a couple of years ago — the fixtures were not correct and fires were starting in attics behind or above the light itself. Have the electrician remove any fixtures that either you or he are concerned about.

Spend a weekend of fun in downtown St. Augustine. Reservations have been made for the group at the St. Augustine Municipal Marina, 111-E Avenida Menendez, St. Augustine, FL 32084 (904-825-1026).
Web Site: http://www.staugustinegovernment.com/visitors/our_waterways.cfm We have a full weekend planned so please join us for some boating and shopping!

Friday Night: CFC “light” social on the docks at 6:00 PM. Bring a small appetizer to share (we will pick a restaurant in town Friday night, so don’t bring too much to share).

Saturday: Andy will be leading one group out to lunch at Hurricane Harry’s. The group will leave around 11:00 AM, and dock at the Oyster Creek Marina. After lunch, you can catch up with the rest of the group at Fort Matanzas or head back to the Marina and do some shopping.

Nick will lead a second group (depending on weather) to the South, where we can enjoy a nice spot to beach and enjoy the water. We are currently planning to anchor at Matanzas Park, just about 30 minutes South of St Augustine. This group will be enjoying lunch on the water and a relaxing day at the Beach.
Later that afternoon, around 6:00 PM, we will have a Dock “Pizza” Party. Everyone should bring a side dish (hors d’oeuvre) or dessert to share, as we will be ordering up some local pizza to sample and enjoy.

Sunday: A leisurely day to head back home after finding a nice place in town for brunch.

Launch Details:
Launch on Friday or Saturday.
On Friday, Andy Carlin will lead a group of boats up. When you sign up, please let Andy know your travel plans, and if you plan to boat up from Daytona Beach. Andy’s boat name is Taking Five and can be hailed on Channel 68. We will launch at the Halifax Marina at Daytona Beach around 1:00 PM. The cruise from Daytona Beach to St. Augustine will take a little less than three hours.
Launch Location:

Halifax Harbor Marina, 450 Basin Street, Daytona Beach, FL 32118
(386-671-3601).
Info on Halifax Marina is available at: http://www.centralfloridacruiseclub.com/resources/halifax-harbor-marina/
If you prefer a closer ramp, then the Vilano Ramp at St Augustine would be the ramp that we would recommend. Nick will be launching from this ramp on Friday evening around 6:30 PM. This ramp is very nice, but the water can get a little “skinny” getting out. The deepest path is to the North (away from the Marina).
Alternate Ramp Info (at St Augustine):
Vilano Boat Ramp GPS Lat: 29°54′42.37″ | Long: 81°18′30.56″
The Vilano Boat Ramp on the map is between San Marco Avenue, and the Vilano Beach Causeway on May St. The Boat Ramp is very wide and can handle 4 trailers at a time. There are 2 large floating docks, one on each side of the ramp. There are new restrooms and parking is plentiful.
The Bridge of Lions in St Augustine is still under restoration.
Information about the restoration is available online at
